Looking to impress your guests or treat yourself? Sweet wines are the ultimate festive companion. Their luscious flavors beautifully complement everything from mince pies to cheeseboards. Whether you opt for the floral fizz of Moscato d’Asti, the rich elegance of Îlot de Haut-Bergeron Sauternes, or the bold intensity of PX Diatomists, there’s something here to make this Christmas truly special.
One of the classics, if you’re only going to have one sweet wine in your house, Sauternes is the one. This one is from one of the oldest estates in Sauternes (a region in Bordeaux that gives its name to the kind of wine) and is fresh and floral with sweet notes of lychee, citrus, vanilla and honey.
Pedro Ximinez poured over ice cream is a taste sensation everyone should have once a year. Super sweet but not cloying, this sherry has wondrous notes of figs, dark chocolate, roasted coffee and cigar box, but it’s the finishing notes of nutmeg and cloves that make it perfect as an accompaniment to Christmas Pudding.
This is special. A 2005 Auslese from perhaps the oldest (still going) winery in the world. This aged Riesling is exceptional with explosive aroma of honey, nectarine, citrus zest and ripe peaches. The huge amount of acidity means this tastes fresh despite the sweetness.
