L’Ilot de Haut Bergeron Sauternes
Where: Bordeaux, France
Grape: Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc
One of the classics, if you're only going to have one sweet wine in your house, Sauternes is the one. This one is from one of the oldest estates in Sauternes (a region in Bordeaux that gives its name to the kind of wine) and is fresh and floral with sweet notes of lychee, citrus, vanilla and honey
A little something we think you should know: Legend has it that the creation of Sauternes (the wine, not the region) was an accident. In 1847, the very wealthy landowner the Marquis de Lur-Saluces was invited by Tsar Nichola I on a Russian hunting trip. Not wanting to turn the Tsar down, the Marquis went, with the strict instruction to his worker not to harvest the vineyards while he was away. On his return he found his grapes had been attached by a fungus called Botrytis. The very lucky accident is that Botrytis causes grape to become partially raisined, creating very concentrated flavours.
