Steffensberg Auslese '05, Staffelter Hof
Where: Kröv, Mosel, Germany
Grape: Riesling
This is special. A 2005 Auslese from perhaps the oldest (still going) winery in the world. This aged Riesling is exceptional with explosive aroma of honey, nectarine, citrus zest and ripe peaches. The huge amount of acidity means this tastes fresh despite the sweetness.
A little something we think you should know: Rumour has it that (centuries ago) a wolf roamed the steep slopes of the Moself valley and killed the winery’s donkey, so the monks running the vineyards caught the wolf, named it Magnusc, and trained Magnus to do the donkey's work. Which is why there is a wolf on the label.
